Dental Family Holiday Plans

This year is a crazy time for most family's.  It is the Holiday season and many of us have a lot of places to go or a lot of friends to see.  For my family that means we are going to be packing up and going to see a lot of people.  It is always a bit of a task to get the kids together, but I have to say that the fun times and the great food and drinks usually pay off for the work it is to get the kids there.  This is part of why I think it is really important to have a set dental plan and schedule for my family.  The fact is that we are all going to be indulging a little more than we probably should.  It is a simple fact that my kids will eat and drink more sugary things than I want them to or that I told them too more likely.  But knowing this is an important thing and that is half the battle.  I am expecting my family to be bad to their teeth and as long as we are protecting our teeth and dental health by doing the right things and keeping each other excited about keeping up with the healthy schedule we are going to be ok.  So I wanted to go over my plan for the year and hope that it gives you some ideas.

The first thing that is important to me is that my family is happy, excited, and also understands the reason to be keeping up with their dental health.  This is done first by getting in a few quick conversations about how much we all don't like cavities or the pain in our teeth. I let them know that it is caused by eating too much sugar and not brushing your teeth enough.  After that, they at least know the route cause and it gives them a logical reason to brush.  Some kids are flat out logical and need that information. Then it gets to the fun part and that even goes for my wife and I as well.

One of the best ways to get excited about brushing your teeth is by adding in a fun and useful toothpaste and maybe even a fun new brush.  Now if you are like me and are super cheap that sounds like a waste of moeny.  Yes, it really is, but there is a benefit of saving money by not having dental appointments and surgeries down the road.  So what I do to cut costs and make sure we are all staying healthy is going to the travel section of grocery stores.  I find a really fun themed tooth brush for each of us.  Sometimes we are all able to be a Star Wars character on our brushes or sometimes it's the Avengers.  It is a fun game and these cost about a dollar each.

What I really like about these brushes is that they always have a suction cup on the back end.  It allows us to simply slap them down on the sink after we are done and not worry about wet bags or toothbrush covers. This means we have clean and fun brushes to use when staying at a new place or even on Christmas Day at our home.
